A
rubber roof is the traditional name for a very modern commercial and industrial flat roof surface. EPDM, or synthetic rubber, is a reinforced weatherproof covering, which is called a “membrane”. These materials get better with age; they cure to their ultimate strength.

As a commercial or industrial flat roof, rubber resists chemicals in the air and it will not crack or peel. An EPDM system has a life expectancy of 25 years and often more, and can be installed in one piece, eliminating seams and joins where roof leaks will occur.
A rubber roof is the number one material chosen by contractors, roof consultants, and architects for either new construction or replacement roofing projects, according to market surveys from the industry publication Building Design and Construction magazine and confirmed by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA).
It is the most often used material in the marketplace today. Over 1 billion square feet of rubber roof coverings are applied in the United States each year.
EPDM (which stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is single-ply, and boasts a successful track record of performance. It is a commercial roofing product, designed to be used only in non-residential roof systems. The top five benefits include:
- Membranes resist weakening with age (called fatigue)
- It has a strong resistance to ozone, weathering, abrasion and UV damage
- It flexes in temperature changes, so it doesn’t crack (called thermal shock durability).
- Hail does not damage a rubber roof
- Fire and heat resistance is superior
In Oklahoma, the wind resistance of EPDM is a major factor and a modern rubber roof offers high wind uplift resistance. In fact, some designs meet the stringent hurricane wind codes of states in the southeast, the toughest in the nation. It is hot-air welded in place for additional adherence. It will stand up to a tornado-strength and straight line winds.
Hail resistance has been proven
In a recent independent study, of 81 EPDM samples, 76 remained waterproof after taking the impact of hail up to 3 inches in diameter.
It is easily installed, reducing any disruption to your place of business. It comes in large sheets, so it requires fewer labor hours to put on.
A rubber roof is a practical choice for energy efficiency in Oklahoma. Coupled with proper insulation, an EPDM roof will produce as much energy savings as other energy efficient materials. EPDM is also available in a white version, adding to the material’s reflectivity. White, or cool roofs, bounce away solar heat, reducing the cooling load on the interior of a commercial or industrial building.
- Sometimes EPDM is installed with a ballast of pavers or stones over the synthetic rubber. Studies conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories concluded that this kind of material was as effective as other kinds of white membrane roofs in reducing energy demand. The ballast shades the membrane, absorbs the heat during the day and then releases it as the day cools.
The cost, amortized over its life expectancy (life cycle costs), exceeds other popular low-slope roofing such as modified bitumen; built-up roofing (BUR); and thermoplastic. The average life expectancy is 25 years, with an ultimate service life of 50 years possible.
